Brass Fittings

Brass fittings are the backbone of pneumatic, plumbing, and general fluid conveyance systems in Australian workshops and industrial facilities. Brass offers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance, machinability, and pressure capability — making it the default fitting material for compressed air systems, water lines, and light fluid services. Types of Brass Fittings

AIMS supplies the full range of standard brass fitting types:

• Elbows: 90° and 45° direction changes. Available in male-male, female-female, and male-female BSP configurations.
• Tees: Three-way connections. Equal tees for splitting or combining flow; reducing tees for connecting different pipe sizes at the branch.
• Couplings and unions: Straight connections joining two pipe or hose ends. Unions allow disassembly without rotating the pipe — important for maintenance access points.
• Nipples: Short male-to-male threaded sections for close-coupling two female fittings. Available in hex and barrel styles.
• Reducers: Step down from one pipe size to another — available as hex reducers and reducing bushes.
• Compression fittings: Nut-and-ferrule connections for copper and plastic tube. No thread sealing required.
• Plugs and caps: Used to close off ports or pipe ends — plugs for female ports, caps for male ends.

BSP vs Compression Connections

BSP threaded fittings are the standard for Australian trade and industrial installations — they connect to threaded pipe nipples, valves, and equipment ports. Thread sealing is achieved with PTFE tape or liquid sealant applied to the threads before assembly. Compression fittings grip the outside of the tube rather than threading — they are quick to install and allow the tube to be disconnected and repositioned without replacing the fitting.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Standard brass fittings are rated for compressed air and water service at typical workshop pressures. For specific system pressures, confirm the fitting's rated working pressure against your system requirements. Brass is not suitable for acetylene gas service due to the risk of explosive acetylene copper compounds — use steel fittings in acetylene installations.

Size Selection

Brass fittings are sized by the BSP thread designation (1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and larger), which relates to the nominal bore of the pipe, not the physical thread diameter. Take note of whether the existing ports are parallel (BSPP) or tapered (BSPT) and whether the fitting requires a face seal or thread engagement seal to achieve a leak-free joint.
