Gates Heavy-Duty Range — Engineered for Mining, Crushers & Shock Loads

For the most demanding industrial drive applications — mining crushers and screens, rock processing, wood chippers, heavy compressors, conveyor head drives — Gates offers a heavy-duty cluster built around aramid (Kevlar) cord and high-power synchronous belt technology:

  • Single Predator V-Belts — aramid (Kevlar) tensile cord for shock loads, overload, and abrasive environments. Classical A/B/C, narrow 3VX/5VX/8VX and metric SPB/SPC sections.
  • Banded Predator V-Belts — Predator construction in banded form for multi-belt high-torque drives. Eliminates belt whip and turnover on heavy reciprocating loads.
  • PolyChain GT Carbon and PolyChain GT Carbon Long — synchronous belts that replace roller chain on heavy industrial drives. No lubrication, longer service life, higher power density.
  • FRAS Fire-Resistant V-Belts — meets AS 1180.7 / AS 1334.10 for underground and surface coal mining.

Industrial V-Belts

Gates Hi-Power II classical wrapped V-belts span the full classical section range — Z, A, B, C, D and E — covering everything from small machinery drives through to the highest power industrial applications. Banded configurations (AA, BB, CC, DD) join multiple belts in a single unit to handle high-torque drives and eliminate belt whip. For drives with shock loads or space constraints, the Tri-Power cogged (notched) AX and BX belts deliver improved flexibility and heat dissipation.

Super HC narrow section 3V, 5V and 8V belts handle high-power compact drives, with cogged 3VX and 5VX versions available for tighter pulley diameters. Single Predator and banded Predator aramid cord belts are the choice for abrasive, slipping or shock-load environments. Light duty drives are served by the PoweRated and Truflex ranges in 3L, 4L and 5L sections. Not sure which section you need? Our V-belt size chart shows cross-sections and dimensions side by side.

Synchronous Timing Belts

Gates PowerGrip HTD belts in 3M, 5M, 8M and 14M sections provide accurate synchronous power transmission for indexing, positioning and high-torque drives. PowerGrip GT4 (8MGT, 14MGT) curvilinear tooth profile belts deliver the highest power density in the Gates industrial timing range with reduced noise and vibration. PolyChain GT Carbon belts, including the long-length versions, replace roller chain in demanding applications — no lubrication required and significantly longer service life. Synchro-Power polyurethane belts in T5, T10, AT5 and AT10 suit precision automation drives. For background on timing belt selection, drive ratios and tooth profiles, see our synchronous timing belt guide.

Micro-V & Automotive Belts

Gates Micro-V FleetRunner serpentine belts serve heavy duty truck and automotive applications. PowerGrip automotive timing belts are manufactured in HNBR for extended service life, and TBS kit packs combine belt and tensioner bearing as a complete replacement solution. Green Stripe heavy duty truck Micro-V belts are available for commercial vehicle fleet maintenance. For mining operations the FRAS (Fire-Resistant Anti-Static) range meets AS 1180.7 / AS 1334.10 requirements for underground and surface coal applications.

Pulleys, Tensioners & Drive Accessories

Gates drives are completed with V-belt pulleys and timing pulleys in matched sections, plus idler pulleys for back-side tensioning and drive routing. Tensioning accessories include Krikit and barrel-type belt tension gauges, the DriveAlign laser alignment tool and belt and pulley gauge sets for identifying worn or unknown sections. Correct belt tension and pulley alignment are the two most common causes of premature belt failure — the right tools make both straightforward.

Hydraulic & Industrial Hose

Gates is equally well known for fluid power. AIMS stocks Gates hydraulic and industrial hose across pressure classes and applications, with matching hose fittings and couplings. For lifting, conveying and washdown, we also carry the broader belt and drive range and shaft couplings that pair with Gates drives.

Need help choosing?

If you're unsure which Gates product suits your drive — V-belt vs synchronous, single belt vs banded, PolyChain vs roller chain — our team can talk through your application. We're particularly used to working with mine sites, food and beverage plants, OEM builders and maintenance teams replacing legacy drives. Compare drive options in our belt vs chain drives guide, or call (02) 9773 0122 and we'll work it out with you.

People Also Ask — Gates V-Belts and Power Transmission

Q: Why is Gates considered the industrial V-belt standard?

Gates is the original V-belt inventor (1917) and remains the engineering benchmark for industrial belt drives. The Gates portfolio covers classical V-belts (A, B, C, D, E sections), narrow wedge belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC), notched cogged belts, banded multi-belt assemblies, Poly Chain GT Carbon synchronous belts, and FRAS fire-resistant variants. Gates publishes the engineering data most equipment OEMs design around — replacements specified by part number reliably match the original equipment performance.

Q: What's the difference between Gates classical and narrow V-belts?

Classical V-belts (A, B, C, D, E section) are the older industry standard with wider profile and lower power capacity per cross-section. Narrow wedge belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC, 3V, 5V, 8V) are more efficient — higher power capacity in smaller cross-section, run cooler, last longer. Most modern industrial drives use narrow wedge; classical remains common on older equipment. Match the belt section to the existing pulley groove — sections aren't interchangeable.

Q: When do I need Poly Chain GT Carbon belts?

Use Poly Chain GT Carbon for synchronous (positive-drive) applications requiring high torque, zero slip, and quiet operation — typical in robotics, machine tools, conveyor positioning, and high-precision drives. The carbon-fibre tensile cord and HNBR compound deliver power density approaching roller chain with much less maintenance. Significantly more expensive than V-belts, justified by reduced downtime and removal of chain lubrication. Common in mining and bulk handling for heavy-duty synchronous transmission.

Q: Are FRAS Gates belts mandatory for mining?

Yes for underground coal mining and many other underground operations — FRAS (Fire Resistant Anti-Static) belts are required where ignition risk from belt friction is a hazard. Compliance is to ISO 1813 and TRG 3608 (NSW Resources Regulator), which superseded MDG 3608 in November 2024. The FRAS rating requires specific elastomer compounds and conductive tensile cords. Standard V-belts are NOT acceptable substitutes — replace with FRAS-rated belts only in any flame-risk environment.

Q: How do I identify a Gates V-belt by code?

Gates V-belts have moulded codes on the back showing section + length. Examples: SPA1500 = SPA section, 1500mm pitch length. A47 = A section, 47-inch outside length. For narrow belts: SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC followed by length in mm. For classical: letter (A-E) followed by length in inches. Banded V-belts show 'R' or 'B' prefix plus the equivalent single-belt code. If the code is worn off, use the V-belt cross-reference chart or contact AIMS — we can identify from the OEM part number or measurements.
