Belt designation

Belt designations follow the standard pattern: profile letter followed by length code. For example, A38 is an A-profile belt with 38 inches inside length; B82 is a B-profile belt with 82 inches inside length. Convert imperial inside length to metric outside circumference by adding the standard belt circumference allowance for the profile.

Truflex versus premium belts — when to choose which

For light-duty applications running at moderate speeds and loads, Truflex and PoweRated deliver reliable service at a sensible price point. For heavy-duty industrial drives, high-cycle production work, or applications where downtime is expensive, the premium ranges (Quad Power 4 cogged, Super HC) earn their cost difference through longer service life and better load handling. Match the belt to the application: don't pay for premium where standard is sufficient, and don't substitute standard where premium is specified.

For multi-belt drives in particular, Gates' matched-set production process produces belts that run together properly rather than fighting each other on the drive.

Replacement practice

For multi-belt drives, replace all belts as a matched set — mixing old and new belts shortens the new belts' life dramatically. Inspect pulleys at replacement: glazed grooves, worn or damaged groove surfaces shorten any belt's life regardless of brand or range. Check tension after run-in (the first hour of use) — V-belts seat into the grooves and lose initial tension during this period.
