Belts

Drive belts transmit power between shafts across a wide range of industrial, commercial, and automotive applications. From the V belt on an irrigation pump to the synchronous timing belt on a precision conveyor, belt selection affects drive efficiency, reliability, and total maintenance cost. AIMS Industrial is a specialist belt supplier carrying a comprehensive range across all major belt types and cross-sections, with Gates as our preferred brand.

Types of Drive Belts

AIMS stocks the full range of belt types used in Australian industry:

  • Classical V belts (A, B, C, D, E section): The most widely used drive belt in industrial and agricultural applications. Reliable, widely available, and interchangeable across manufacturers following ISO standards.
  • Narrow V belts (3V, 5V, 8V): Higher power density than classical belts — transmit more power in a smaller cross-section. Increasingly specified on new equipment and motor-pump sets.
  • Banded V belts: Multiple belts joined by a tie band for high-power, shock-load drives. Eliminate belt turnover and vibration on heavy industrial equipment including crushers and compressors.
  • Synchronous / timing belts: Toothed belts that drive in phase — no slip, precise speed ratio. Used on conveyor positioning systems, indexing drives, and wherever timing between shafts must be maintained.
  • Poly V / ribbed belts (PK, PL, PJ section): Multiple narrow ribs transmit high power in compact widths. Common on automotive accessories and HVAC equipment.
  • Flat belts: Suited to high-speed, light-power applications and line shafting. Used in textile and wood processing industries.

Gates — Our Preferred Belt Brand

AIMS Industrial leads with Gates as the preferred brand across all belt categories. Gates is the global leader in power transmission belts and has a strong distribution and technical support presence in Australia. Gates belts are specified extensively across Australian industry for their consistency, performance, and availability. AIMS stocks the Gates Classical, Quad-Power, Poly Chain, and Predator series alongside the full Gates automotive belt range.

Selecting the Right Belt

Belt selection starts with the cross-section, which is determined by the power to be transmitted and the sheave diameter. From there, the correct inside or outside circumference is calculated from centre distance and sheave sizes. When replacing a belt, the easiest approach is to read the belt designation moulded into the belt body. If the designation is worn off or the belt is a non-standard cross-section, AIMS can assist with cross-referencing from equipment data or competitor numbers.
