Micro-V belts (also called multi-rib or polyV belts) are the modern answer to traditional V-belts — a single belt with multiple parallel ribs running on a matching grooved pulley. They're slimmer, run faster, transmit more power per unit width, and grip on smaller-diameter pulleys than classical V-belts. The four standard profiles

  • PJ — 2.34mm rib pitch, the smallest profile, for fractional-power and accessory drives
  • PK — 3.56mm rib pitch, the most common automotive profile (serpentine and accessory drives)
  • PL — 4.70mm rib pitch, for industrial drives in the small-to-medium power range
  • PM — 9.40mm rib pitch, for heavier industrial drives where higher power is on the line

Belt specification looks like 730J6 — that's the length code (730 in tenths of inches) followed by the profile (J for PJ) and the rib count (6 ribs). Convert and cross-reference are straightforward, but get both numbers right.

Bring us the OE part number, a photo of the worn belt's profile, or the rib count and length stamped on the side, and we'll cross-reference to the right Gates equivalent. Common automotive accessory belt lengths are stocked; less common industrial sizes are available on short lead.

Tensioning and alignment

Micro-V belts are unforgiving of bad tension and worse alignment. Too loose, the belt slips, glazes, and shortens its life dramatically. Too tight, bearings load up and shaft seals fail early. Use the belt manufacturer's deflection test or a frequency tension meter rather than guessing. Pulley alignment matters even more on multi-rib belts than on V-belts — a few millimetres of misalignment between pulleys produces audible chirp at the belt edge and rapid rib wear.

When to replace

Inspect Micro-V belts for cracking on the rib side, glazing on the cord side, missing chunks of rib, or tracking marks on the pulley. Squeal under load is the early warning; visible damage is the late one. Belts cost a fraction of the downtime caused by a roadside or production-line failure.
