Gates Hi-Power II Powerband Belts

Gates Hi-Power II Powerband belts are banded classical V-belts — multiple individual V-belt ribs joined by a common tie-band across the top surface. This construction turns what would otherwise be a set of separate belts into a single, rigid unit that runs as one. Banded belts eliminate the individual belt whip, turnover, and uneven load sharing that can occur when separate belts are used in high-power, multi-strand drives. AIMS Industrial stocks Gates Hi-Power II Powerband belts for high-power industrial drive applications across Australia.

When to Specify Banded Belts

Banded V-belts are specified for drives where individual classical belts are not adequate:

  • High-torque drives with pulsating loads: Crushers, hammer mills, reciprocating compressors, and wood chippers create pulsating torque that can cause individual belts to flip or turn over in the groove. The tie-band holds all strands in alignment regardless of load variation.
  • Long-span drives: On long centre-distance drives, individual belt strands can oscillate and whip at certain speeds. The tie-band damps this oscillation, improving stability and reducing belt wear.
  • Drives requiring more than 4 individual belts: When the drive calculation requires 5 or more individual belts to transmit the required power, a banded belt is more practical and typically more economical to maintain.

Replacement Considerations

Banded belts must always be replaced as complete units — never remove the tie-band to use the individual ribs as separate belts, and never mix an old banded belt with a new one on the same drive. The banded configuration means the full unit must be installed and removed together, requiring the drive centre distance to be adjusted for installation clearance. Gates Powerband belts are designated with a suffix indicating the number of strands (e.g., 2/B50 is a 2-strand banded B50 belt). Why Choose a Powerband Belt?

Powerband belts eliminate the belt flip and rollover problems that can occur with individual V-belts in high-shock or pulsating load applications. The tie band holds the belt set in correct alignment at all times, even under sudden load changes or reverse bending conditions around the top of the sheave. This makes them well suited to crushers, chippers, compressors, and other machinery subject to shock loading. Installation and tensioning follow the same principles as standard V-belt drives — the cross-section profile and sheave groove angles remain identical. For high-cycle or vibration-prone applications, Powerband belts are the more reliable long-term choice.
