Choosing a button die
Start with the thread form, size and pitch you need to cut, then match the die's outside diameter (OD) to your die stock. Common ODs in this range are 13/16, 1, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. HSS dies hold an edge longer and suit harder materials and more regular use, while carbon alloy steel dies suit lighter, occasional hand threading in softer metals. Split (adjustable) button dies let you fine tune the thread fit, and solid dies cut to a set size. Use cutting oil, start the die square and back it off regularly to clear swarf. Dies are listed by thread form, so be sure of the thread before you order; if you are not sure what you have, send us a sample or call us.

What is a button die used for?
A button die cuts or re-cuts an external thread on a bolt, stud or rod. It fits into a die stock, which you turn by hand or hold in a machine to run the die down the work.
What is the difference between a split and a solid button die?
A split (adjustable) die has a slot so you can adjust the thread fit slightly, which helps when you are matching a nut. A solid die cuts to a fixed size. We list both, including Goliath circular split and circular solid dies.
HSS or carbon steel button die?
HSS dies hold an edge longer and suit harder materials and regular use. Carbon alloy steel dies suit lighter, occasional hand threading in softer metals. We list both from Sutton Tools.
What is the OD of a button die?
The OD is the outside diameter of the die, which has to match the die stock. Sutton lists 1, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch ODs, and Goliath and Bordo list 13/16, 1 and 1-1/2 inch.
