Chuck Keys & Holders

Chuck keys are the tightening and loosening tools used with keyed drill chucks — the gear-driven chuck type found on drill presses, lathes, tailstocks, and many bench drills. Without the correct chuck key, the chuck cannot be properly secured to the drill bit or workholding tool, and attempting to use the wrong size key will damage the chuck's bevel gear teeth. AIMS Industrial supplies chuck keys and chuck key holders for workshops and machining operations across Australia.

Types of Chuck Keys

Chuck keys come in two main configurations:

  • T-handle chuck keys: A T-shaped handle with the chuck engagement key at the bottom of the stem. The T-handle provides good leverage for tightening and is the most common chuck key design. Available in multiple sizes to match different chuck jaw ring diameters.
  • Wing-type chuck keys: A flat key body with wing extensions on each side. Less leverage than a T-handle, but the low-profile design suits installations with limited clearance around the chuck housing.

Chuck keys are sized by two measurements: the key pilot diameter (the pin that engages the chuck body locating hole) and the key square drive size (the square that drives the bevel gear). Both dimensions must match the chuck specifications. The chuck model or size is usually stamped on the chuck body — this information can be used to identify the correct key size.

Identifying the Correct Key Size

A chuck key that is slightly too small or too large in the pilot will feel sloppy in the locating hole and will not drive the bevel gear squarely — this causes uneven chuck tightening and premature chuck wear. Most drill presses and bench drills use a standard key size for each chuck capacity, and many chucks have the key size stamped on the chuck ring or jaw housing. If the key size is not marked, measure the locating hole diameter and bevel gear tooth size with a vernier calliper to identify the correct specification.

Chuck Key Holders and Clips

A drill press without a secure key holder is a safety hazard. Chuck keys left in the chuck are a well-known cause of injury — if the machine is started with the key still engaged, the key becomes a projectile. Spring-mounted chuck key holders clip to the drill press column or head and hold the key securely in a retainer that must be actively released to remove the key. This design ensures the key cannot be left in the chuck accidentally.

Magnetic holders mounted adjacent to the drill press provide a less secure but practical alternative for keeping the key close to the machine without leaving it in the chuck. For high-turnover production environments, a key tether that attaches the key to the machine housing keeps it within reach without the chuck-insertion risk.
