Confined Space Equipment Selection — Quick Reference (WHS Reg 73)

Confined space entry = ONE OF HIGHEST-RISK activities in AU workplaces. Work Health + Safety Regulations require DOCUMENTED procedure + permit + atmospheric monitoring + rescue plan. Specialised equipment mandatory.

Confined Space Item Best For
Gas Detector (4-in-1 / Multi-Gas) Atmospheric monitoring — O2 + LEL + H2S + CO
Tripod + Winch (Rescue) Vertical entry + retrieval
Confined Space Harness (D-Ring Rear) Worker fall arrest + retrieval
Lifeline + Inertia Reel Worker connection to rescue
Forced Ventilation Fan Air purge + atmosphere control
Supplied-Air Breathing Apparatus (SABA) Oxygen-deficient atmosphere
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Toxic + IDLH atmosphere
Communication / Lifeline Voice Worker-to-rescuer contact
Permit-to-Work System Documented authorisation

Critical: WHS Reg 73 mandates competent person + permit + atmospheric testing + standby rescuer. NEVER enter without 4-gas detector + ventilation + permit. Annual training mandatory. Brands: Safetylink, 3M. Companion: safety equipment, height safety, respiratory protection.

Confined Space Equipment

Confined space entry is one of the highest-risk activities in Australian workplaces. The Work Health and Safety Regulations require a documented confined space entry procedure, atmospheric testing before and during entry, and rescue capability in place before any worker enters. Equipment failures or procedural shortcuts in confined space work have fatal consequences — there is no margin for error. AIMS Industrial supplies confined space safety equipment for compliant entry procedures in industrial, construction, and maintenance environments.

Atmospheric Gas Detection

Atmospheric testing is mandatory before confined space entry and must continue during occupation. Gas detectors for confined space use typically monitor four parameters: oxygen percentage (safe range 19.5–23.5%), flammable gas as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). Multi-gas detectors covering all four parameters in a single unit are the standard for confined space entry in most Australian industries. Detectors must be calibrated and bump-tested per the manufacturer's schedule and the relevant Australian standard.

Rescue Tripods and Davit Arms

A rescue capability must be established before entry — in most situations this means a mechanical retrieval system capable of raising an incapacitated worker from the space without a rescuer entering. Confined space tripods and davit arms provide the overhead anchorage and cable system required for vertical rescue from manholes, tanks, and similar access points. Tripods are the most versatile solution for open area access; davit arms suit fixed installations where a permanent anchorage point is appropriate.

Harnesses and Lanyards

Workers entering confined spaces must wear a full-body harness connected to the retrieval line above. The harness must be rated for rescue retrieval, which places different requirements on the dorsal D-ring and webbing than a standard fall arrest harness. Ensure the harness is rated and labelled for confined space use, not only fall arrest.

Ventilation and Communication

Forced ventilation equipment maintains safe atmospheric conditions during extended confined space occupancy. Communication systems — hardwire intercoms or intrinsically safe radios — maintain contact between the entrant and the standby person outside. A standby person must remain at the entry point at all times during confined space work.

Training and Competency

Equipment alone does not make confined space entry safe. WHS regulations require that all personnel involved in confined space entry — entrants, standby persons, and rescue team members — are trained and competent in their roles. Equipment must be inspected before each use, and atmospheric testing must be carried out by a competent person using calibrated equipment. AIMS supplies the equipment; the competency and procedure are the site's responsibility.
