Choosing an extraction tool
Start with what has failed. For a broken or stripped screw or bolt, look at the screw extractor sets and match the extractor size to the fastener size. Each set lists the range it covers, for example the Sutton M603S15 is #1 to #5 for M4 to M20 and the M601 runs #1 to #9 for M4 to M56. For studs, the Ko-Ken, Trax and Stahlwille pullers and extractors are made for the job, and the Trax straight rod types suit a stud with enough standing proud to grip. A damaged wire thread insert needs the Recoil insert extraction tool rather than a screw extractor. Several sets include left hand drills for the pilot hole. Always check the data sheet for the size range and drill size to use with each extractor before you start.

What is the difference between a screw extractor and a stud puller?
A screw extractor is used on a broken or stripped screw or bolt, and the sets in this range are sized by fastener diameter. A stud puller or stud extractor is made for studs, and the Ko-Ken, Trax and Stahlwille tools here are driven with a socket drive or a wrench. Both types are listed.
How do I remove a damaged thread insert?
Use a thread insert extraction tool. The Recoil RC50003 listed here covers M4 to M24 inserts. A screw extractor is not the right tool for a wire thread insert.
What size extractor do I need?
