Choosing the Right Extraction Tool

Extraction tool selection depends on the type of fastener problem, the fastener size and the access available.

• Screw & Bolt Extractors: Left-hand spiral extractors are drilled into the broken fastener and turned anticlockwise — as the extractor bites into the fastener, it simultaneously applies removal torque. Correct pilot hole size is critical for extractor success.
• Damaged Head Removal Sockets: Ko-Ken’s spiral-fluted removal sockets grip the outside of a rounded bolt or nut head and are driven with a ratchet or impact wrench. Effective where the fastener head is accessible but the drive profile is damaged.
• Thread Repair Inserts: Recoil thread repair kits drill out the damaged thread, tap a new thread and install a stainless steel insert that restores the original thread specification. The preferred solution where a stripped internal thread must be restored to full load capacity.
