File Handles
A file without a handle is both unsafe and impractical. The tang — the pointed, unfinished rear extension of the file body — is designed to be driven into a handle. Using a file without a handle exposes the tang, which can penetrate the palm with serious injury if the file catches or slips. File handles convert the tang into a safe, ergonomic grip that gives the operator control and enables the file to be applied with consistent pressure and direction. AIMS Industrial supplies file handles in wood and plastic for standard and quick-change applications.
Types of File Handles
- Wooden file handles: The traditional form — a turned hardwood body with a brass ferrule at the file end to prevent splitting when the tang is driven in. Wooden handles are comfortable in hand and absorb vibration better than rigid plastic. They are available in sizes matched to the file tang diameter and file length.
- Plastic file handles: Moulded polypropylene or similar resin handles are resistant to oils and solvents that would discolour or swell wooden handles. Preferred in workshop environments where handles are regularly exposed to cutting fluids, machine oil, or chemical contamination.
- Quick-change file handles: A chuck mechanism allows files to be swapped without driving the handle off and on — the tang is released by rotating a collar. Efficient when multiple file profiles are in use and switching between them frequently during a job.
Fitting a File Handle
To fit a wooden or plain plastic handle, the tang hole must be the correct size for the file tang — too large and the handle will be loose; too small and the handle will split. Drill or ream the hole if needed before fitting. Drive the handle onto the tang using controlled downward taps with the handle held vertically — do not use the file to lever or strike the handle into place. The handle should seat firmly with the ferrule tight against the file shoulder.
Handle Sizing
File handles are sized to suit different file lengths and tang sizes. The three most common sizes in Australian workshops correspond to files from approximately 150mm to 250mm in length. Mismatching handle and file size results in a loose fit (handle too large) or a split handle (handle too small). For help finding the right handle for a specific file or file set, contact our team.
Stocking at AIMS
AIMS Industrial stocks file handles in wood and plastic to suit the most common file sizes in Australian workshops. Replacement handles are an inexpensive item — always fitting a handle before using any file is a simple safety measure that eliminates the risk of a penetrating hand injury from an exposed tang.
