Standard and quick-release hydraulic couplers
The everyday coupler for most workshops. A spring-loaded jaw or collar snaps over the ball head of a standard hydraulic (Zerk-type) grease nipple, holding under pressure while grease is pumped through. Quick-release versions add a lever or sleeve that frees the coupler with one action rather than pulling it off against jaw friction — useful when you're working through a lot of grease points in a session. Button head and giant button head couplers
Button-head nipples have a larger head — around 5/8" on standard button-head fittings and 7/8" on giant button-head fittings — than the ball head on a standard hydraulic nipple, so they need a coupler sized and shaped to match. These are common on heavier machinery and mining plant where a bigger grease volume needs to pass through the fitting. Swivel couplers (Alemlube 14501, Alemite B6509-D) let the hose rotate freely at the coupler rather than twisting, which reduces hose fatigue and makes it easier to present the coupler squarely to nipples at odd angles.

Matching a coupler to your grease nipple
Two things need to line up before you order a coupler: the nipple type at the lubrication point, and the thread on your grease gun hose or rigid pipe.
Nipple type. Grease nipple and fitting dimensions in general industrial use are covered by SAE J534 (Lubrication Fittings), which sets out the standard hydraulic (Zerk-type) ball-head profile most equipment uses, alongside button-head, flush and pin-type variants. Metric hydraulic-type nipples (commonly M6, M8 or M10 thread) are also widely specified, particularly on European-origin equipment. A coupler built for one nipple profile won't reliably seal on another — a standard hydraulic coupler's jaws are sized for a ball head, not the larger head on a button-head nipple, so it either won't engage or won't hold under pump pressure.
Gun-side thread. The coupler attaches to your grease gun's hose or rigid pipe on a separate thread, most commonly 1/8" BSP, BSPT or NPT on Australian and European-spec guns, with metric threads like M10 x 1 also used. Check the thread on your existing coupler or the end of your hose before ordering — a coupler with the wrong gun-side thread won't screw on at all, regardless of how well it matches the nipple you're trying to service.
