Choosing a torch or floodlight
Torch, spotlight or floodlight: a torch is the everyday carry light. A spotlight throws a narrow beam a long way for searching. A floodlight spreads light over a work area. The Macnaught WL-FL1400 gives you both a 400 lumen spot and a flood in one pocket-sized body.
Output is only part of it: lumens measure total output, while lux is how bright the light is where you are working. The same lumens spread wide look dimmer than a focused beam, so match the beam type to your distance. Coast's Pure Beam Focusing torches let you change between spot and flood by twisting or sliding the head.
Power source: rechargeable lights suit daily use. The Hansa and Champion lights and some Coast models may use batteries, so check the product page. If your team already runs HiKOKI 18V tools, the UB18DA search light runs on the same batteries. It is sold skin only, so the battery and charger are not included.
Water and dust protection: the Macnaught WL-FL1400 and WL-FL2100 are rated IP65, which is dust-tight and protected against water jets. The Macnaught WL-AL1000 and the HiKOKI UB18DA are IP54, which gives dust and splash protection. Check the product page for the rating on other models.
Hazardous areas: none of these lights is sold as Ex-rated. Work in a classified hazardous area needs equipment certified for that zone under the AS/NZS 60079 series. Do not use a standard torch there.

Handheld flashlights — common questions
Why is a 1,000 lumen torch not always bright enough for a task 50 metres away?
Lumens measure total output, while lux measures how bright the light is where it lands. A beam spread wide loses brightness quickly with distance. For long distances, choose a focused spot beam rather than relying on the lumen figure alone.
What do IP54 and IP65 mean on a torch or floodlight?
IP54 means protection against dust build-up and against splashing water. IP65 means the light is dust-tight and protected against water jets. The Macnaught WL-FL1400 and WL-FL2100 are IP65, and the Macnaught WL-AL1000 and HiKOKI UB18DA are IP54.
Can I use these torches in a hazardous area?
No. None of the lights in this range is sold as Ex-rated. Hazardous areas need equipment certified for the zone under the AS/NZS 60079 series, such as IECEx certified torches.
What is the difference between a spot beam and a flood beam?
A spot beam is narrow and throws light a long way, which suits searching and distance inspection. A flood beam spreads light wide, which suits close work and lighting a work area. Coast Pure Beam Focusing torches let you switch between the two with one light.
Can I run a work light off my cordless tool battery?
Yes, if you use HiKOKI 18V tools. The HiKOKI UB18DA search light runs on the HiKOKI 18V battery. It is sold skin only, so you need the battery and charger already.
Can the Macnaught WL-AL1000 charge a phone?
The WL-AL1000 includes a power bank function with a USB port that outputs up to 5V DC at 2A, so it can charge a USB device as well as light the work area.
