Inertia Reels and Self-Retracting Lifelines for Fall Arrest in Australia
An inertia reel — also called a self-retracting lifeline (SRL) — is a fall arrest device that pays out cable or webbing freely during normal movement, then locks instantly when a fall is detected. Unlike a fixed-length lanyard, an SRL minimises fall distance by arresting the fall within centimetres rather than metres, significantly reducing the forces involved and the risk of striking a lower level. AIMS Industrial supplies inertia reels and SRLs for work-at-height applications in Australian industry.
How inertia reels work
The lifeline is wound on a spring-loaded drum inside a housing. During normal walking or repositioning, the line extends and retracts freely. When a fall begins and the extraction rate exceeds the inertia threshold, a centrifugal braking mechanism engages and arrests the line, stopping the fall within the device's rated fall distance. After arrest, the device remains locked until manually reset, signalling that inspection is required before the reel is returned to service.
AS/NZS 1891 compliance
Inertia reels used in Australian workplaces for fall arrest must comply with AS/NZS 1891.3 (Self-retracting devices for use with industrial fall-arrest systems). This standard specifies performance requirements including arrest force limits, energy absorption, and unit strength. Under WHS regulations, any fall arrest equipment must be fit for purpose, inspected regularly, and removed from service after a fall or when damaged.
Selection criteria
- Line length — match to the working height; common lengths are 3m, 5m, 10m, and 20m
- Line material — galvanised wire rope for abrasion resistance in industrial environments; webbing for lighter-duty or confined space work
- Rescue function — some units include a descent/rescue capability for confined space egress applications
- Swivel top — reduces line twist during movement; important for extended-duration tasks
Inspection and maintenance requirements
Under AS/NZS 1891 and WHS regulations, fall arrest equipment must be inspected before each use and subjected to regular formal inspection by a competent person. Any SRL that has been subject to a fall arrest event must be removed from service and inspected by the manufacturer or their authorised service agent before being returned to use. Record all inspections and retire equipment per the manufacturer's service life recommendations.
