How Link V-Belts Work

Gates Link V-Belts consist of individual polyurethane links that interlock through a positive engagement system. The links are assembled into the required belt length by connecting them in a chain — excess links are removed or additional links added to reach the precise length needed for the drive. The assembled belt is then wrapped around the pulleys and the two ends are connected to form a complete drive loop without any belt threading. The polyurethane link construction provides good flexibility, oil resistance, and the V-profile engagement with the pulley grooves needed for effective power transmission. The interlocking system holds the links under belt tension without slippage.

Where Link V-Belts Are Used

The principal advantage of link V-belts is the ability to install and replace them without drive disassembly. They are widely used on fan drives, agricultural equipment, HVAC systems, and machinery where the motor is fixed and the drive access is limited. In maintenance applications, a link belt replacement can be completed significantly faster than a conventional belt replacement on a difficult-access drive — reducing downtime on production equipment. They are also useful where belt length must be adjusted to compensate for drive centre distance variation, as links can be added or removed to fine-tune the belt length.

Performance Considerations

Link V-belts are a practical maintenance solution rather than a performance replacement for conventional matched-set V-belts on high-power drives. At high speeds and loads, the flex of the individual links generates more heat than an equivalent solid belt, reducing efficiency and belt life compared to a properly tensioned conventional belt. For drives where minimising slip and maximising power transfer efficiency is the priority — high-power pumps, compressors, or production machinery — a conventional Gates V-belt remains the better long-term solution. Link belts are the correct choice when the installation constraint is the dominant consideration.
