Layout Marking in Engineering & Fabrication

• Carbide vs Steel Tips: Tungsten carbide tips stay sharper 10–20× longer than hardened steel on hard metals (tool steel, hardened components, stainless). For soft metals (aluminium, mild steel) a hardened steel tip is adequate. Never use a carbide scriber on glass — it will shatter.
• Chalk Line Accuracy: For chalk lines over long spans, tension the line before snapping to prevent sag-induced inaccuracy. On dusty or wet surfaces, use fine chalk and snap the line with a single clean strike for maximum line definition.
