Roller Support Stands

Roller support stands use a freely rotating ball or roller at the top of an adjustable-height column to support the workpiece while allowing it to be fed longitudinally into the machine. The rolling contact eliminates the friction that a fixed-rest surface would create, allowing long bar and pipe to be pushed or pulled through the machine without resistance from the support. Roller height adjustment matches the support point to the machine's infeed table height — essential for accurate alignment with the machine's feed axis. V-groove roller tops suit round bar and pipe, keeping the workpiece centred. Flat or ball-top rollers suit square, flat, and irregular sections. Fixed and Steady Rest Supports

For lathe work on long slender workpieces, steady rests and follower rests provide in-machine support that prevents the workpiece from deflecting under the cutting forces. A steady rest clamps to the lathe bed and supports the workpiece at a fixed position between headstock and tailstock — essential for turning long shafts, screwcutting long threaded sections, and boring through long tubes where deflection would produce taper and out-of-round results. A follower rest moves with the carriage, supporting the workpiece immediately behind the cutting tool — preventing the tool's own cutting force from deflecting the workpiece laterally during turning.

Adjustable Height and Configuration

Material support stands should be adjustable in height to align with machines of different table heights. Telescoping column designs cover a range of table heights from a single stand, which is more practical in workshops with multiple machines than fixed-height stands that suit only one machine. The base should be wide and stable enough that a long, heavy workpiece resting on the stand does not tip it. Folding or collapsible stands store compactly when not in use, reducing floor space impact in workshops where stands are deployed as needed rather than left permanently in position.
