Measuring Wedge Selection — Quick Reference

Measuring wedges (taper wedges / wedge gauges) — GRADUATED WEDGE shape for measuring CRACK + GAP + SLOT widths at depth. Workshop + structural inspection + machinery + concrete + automotive. Different from feeler gauge (parallel) — wedge gives WIDTH AT DEPTH.

Measuring Wedge Type Best For
Standard Wedge Gauge Workshop gap measurement
Bridge / Crack Gauge Crack width measurement
Metric / Imperial Graduated Match standard
Stainless Steel Workshop standard
Small (0-15mm) Fine gap measurement
Larger (0-50mm+) Wide gap measurement
Combined with Feeler Gauge Workshop versatility

Critical: Compare to TAPER GAUGE — see taper gauges. Use FEELER GAUGE for parallel gap. Verify CALIBRATION periodically. Companion: taper gauges, measuring tools, feeler gauge guide, telescopic gauges.

Measuring wedges are tapered, graduated gauges that slide into a gap or crack until they stop — the reading at the surface gives the gap width directly. They're a workshop-floor inspection standard for measuring slot widths, weld root gaps, structural cracks and any opening too wide for a feeler gauge.

Where they fit

  • Welding inspection — root gap measurement before tacking and welding.
  • Structural inspection — crack width tracking on concrete, steel and masonry.
  • Machinery condition monitoring — gap and clearance measurement on bearings, gears and couplings.
  • Site work where a digital tool is impractical and a fast, reliable mechanical reading is needed.

Read at the surface of the work, hold the wedge perpendicular to the gap, and use the wedge under its own weight — never force it.
