Choosing a fire extinguisher or blanket
Extinguishers are matched to the type of fire. ABE dry chemical extinguishers are a general-purpose choice for workshops and vehicles, while CO2 extinguishers are commonly chosen for electrical equipment because they leave no residue. A fire blanket is a way to smother a small fire, such as a pan or small container fire, and to wrap around a person. Pick the size you can handle quickly, and put each unit where it is easy to reach.
The right extinguisher type and number for your site comes from your fire risk assessment, your building or fire safety adviser and the Australian Standards that apply, so confirm that before you buy. Extinguishers also need regular inspection and servicing by a qualified provider, so ask your service provider what they require.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the fire ratings, size and suitability of each extinguisher or blanket for your hazard before relying on it.
