A multi-purpose sealant is the cartridge in the gun that handles the everyday gap-filling, joint-sealing, and general-purpose adhesion work that doesn't justify reaching for a specialist product. The chemistry types in a multi-purpose range

• Acrylic-based — paintable, easy to apply, suits indoor general-purpose joints with limited movement
• Silicone-based — flexible, weatherproof, but not paintable; right for sanitary and weather-exposed joints
• Polyurethane — strong adhesion to most substrates, paintable, handles wider joint movement than acrylic
• Hybrid (MS polymer) — combines flexibility with paintability and good UV resistance — the modern default for many applications

Choosing the right sealant

Three questions drive the choice. What's the substrate (porous like concrete, smooth like glass, or coated like painted steel)? Will the joint move under thermal expansion or load (small movement is acrylic territory; larger movement needs polyurethane or hybrid)? Does it need to be paintable (silicones are not, most others are)? Get those three right and the right product is usually obvious.

Application practice

Surface preparation matters more than sealant choice. Clean and dry the substrate, remove old sealant fully (don't apply over a failing existing bead), and prime where the data sheet calls for it. Apply with a steady-pressure caulking gun, tool the bead within the working time, and protect from rain or condensation while curing. A good bead applied properly outlasts a great sealant applied poorly.

Pack sizes

Most multi-purpose sealants are stocked in standard 300ml cartridges (the size that fits a standard caulking gun). Sausage packs (600ml) suit production work where bigger guns and longer beads are the norm. Smaller tubes (50ml-100ml) suit precision repair and toolbox use.
