Notching Punches and Dies
Notching punches cut neat geometric notches from sheet metal — V-shaped corners for box folding, square notches for assembly tabs, and adjustable-angle cuts for custom fabrication. They're the right tool for clean corner removal where bandsaw, plasma, or shears would leave a rougher cut and waste more material. AIMS Industrial stocks notching punches and dies for sheet metal workshops, fabrication shops, and HVAC duct manufacturers.
What's in the range
- V-notching dies — fixed 90° notches for corner removal in folding work, where the notch lets the metal fold to a clean inside corner
- Adjustable-angle V-notchers — for non-90° folds and decorative work
- Square notching dies — for tab-and-slot assembly and rectangular cutouts
- Punch-and-die replacement sets — wear parts for existing notching machines
- Mounting accessories — adapters, holders, and fixtures for fitting dies to standard punch presses
Where notching earns its place
- Sheet metal box and pan fabrication — V-notching corners so the sheet folds to a clean inside corner without buckling
- HVAC ductwork — corner notches in panel work for transitions and end caps
- Cabinet manufacturing — clean tab and slot cutouts for assembly
- Production sheet work — repeatable notches in higher volume than bandsaw or shears can deliver
Material capacity
Notching dies are rated by material thickness and tensile strength. A typical workshop V-notcher handles 1.0mm-2.0mm mild steel with the matching die set; heavier dies and presses extend that to 3mm-4mm. Stainless steel rates approximately 70-80% of the mild steel capacity. Check the die spec before pushing into thicker or harder material — overloading shortens die life dramatically.
Punch and die maintenance
Notching punches and dies wear at the cutting edge. Symptoms of worn dies are burrs on the notched edge, increasing cutting force required, and visible chipping on the die face. Sharpening (regrinding the cutting edge) is possible on most punch-and-die sets a limited number of times before the relief geometry is exhausted. Replacement is then more economical than further sharpening.
Working safely
Notching dies operate under high force in a small workspace — fingers between the punch and die at the wrong moment is a serious injury. Use the machine's guards, two-hand operation if fitted, and proper material support so the operator's hands are clear of the cut zone. Never modify or remove safety devices.
