Nylon Lock Nuts

AIMS Industrial sells numerous nylon lock nut (nyloc nut) variants across metric, UNC, UNF and BSW thread standards in 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, zinc-plated carbon steel, zinc-yellow and mechanically galvanised finishes.

Nylon lock nuts (also called nyloc nuts or nylon insert lock nuts) contain a nylon collar in the top of the nut that deforms around the bolt thread under torque, providing vibration-resistant locking without the need for thread-locking compound.

Unlike spring lock washers, nyloc nuts maintain their locking force even after repeated assembly and disassembly cycles.

Thread Standards Available

  • Metric: Metric hex nyloc nuts in grades 6, 8 and 10, metric fine thread nyloc nuts (Grade 8), and metric nylon insert lock nuts in zinc-plated, zinc-yellow and zinc-yellow finish. Available in 304 SS and 316 SS for corrosion-resistant applications.
  • UNC (Unified National Coarse): UNC hex nyloc nuts in Grade 5 and Grade 8 zinc-plated, UNC 304 SS, UNC 316 SS, UNC nyloc thin hex nuts. Also a UNC self-locking nut assortment refill and the Champion CA126 UNC/UNF assortment kit.
  • UNF (Unified National Fine): UNF nyloc thin hex nuts (ASME B18.16) in zinc-plated, UNF nyloc Grade 5, UNF self-locking nut assortment refill and nylon insert lock nut assortment refill.
  • BSW (British Standard Whitworth): BSW for older imperial-thread equipment and machinery still in service in Australia.

Finishes and Materials

  • 304 Stainless Steel: Corrosion-resistant austenitic stainless for industrial, marine and food-grade applications. The nylon insert limits the continuous service temperature; not suitable for high-temperature applications.
  • 316 Stainless Steel (A4): 316 SS (A4 marine grade) for high-chloride environments including coastal and offshore applications.
  • Zinc-plated (Class 6, 8, 10): Standard carbon steel nyloc nuts with electroplated zinc for mild corrosion protection in general engineering and construction. Class 8 is the most common grade for general applications.
  • Zinc-yellow passivate: Yellow chromate passivation over zinc plating, providing improved corrosion resistance compared to clear zinc. Commonly used in automotive and earthmoving applications.
  • Mechanically galvanised: Heavier zinc coating than electroplating, suitable for outdoor, structural and construction applications.

Nut Profiles

  • Standard hex nyloc: The most common profile. Hex flats suit standard sockets and spanners.
  • Heavy hex nyloc: Nyloc heavy hex nut Class 8 zinc-plated — wider and thicker than standard hex, providing greater bearing area. Used in structural steel and high-load fastening applications.
  • Thin hex nyloc: Nyloc thin hex nut Class 4 zinc-plated — reduced height for space-constrained assemblies.
