Industrial Oil Selection — Quick Reference

Oils = workshop everyday consumable: engine oil for vehicles + plant, gear oil for transmissions, hydraulic oil for power equipment, compressor oil for air systems, cutting oil for machining. Each application = specific viscosity + additive package + performance.

Oil Type Best For
Engine Oil (Petrol / Diesel) Vehicle + plant engine — per OEM grade
Hydraulic Oil (ISO VG 32/46/68) Hydraulic systems — see hydraulic oil guide
Gear Oil (GL-4 / GL-5) Manual transmissions + diff — see gear oil guide
Compressor Oil Reciprocating + rotary screw compressors
Cutting Oil / Coolant Machining + tapping + threading — see cutting fluids
Turbine Oil Turbines + bearings + lightly-loaded gears
Slideway Oil Machine tool slideways + ways
Food-Grade Oil (NSF H1) Food processing + incidental contact
Mineral vs Synthetic vs Semi-Synthetic Cost / performance / temperature trade-off

Critical: NEVER substitute oil types — engine oil ≠ hydraulic oil ≠ gear oil ≠ compressor oil. Additive packages are application-specific (detergents in engine oil cause hydraulic foaming; lack of EP additives in engine oil destroys gear teeth). Always match viscosity + grade to OEM spec. See oil viscosity chart. Brands: Motul, Loctite, Molyslip, Penrite. Companion: lubricants, greases.

Industrial Oils

Oils are the workshop's everyday consumable — engine oil for vehicles and plant, gear oil for transmissions and reduction units, hydraulic oil for power equipment, compressor oil for air systems, cutting oil for machining work. Each application demands specific viscosity, additive package, and performance characteristics; running the wrong oil shortens equipment life and voids warranties. AIMS Industrial supplies a curated oil range across the categories Australian trade and industrial customers actually use.

The categories within oils

  • Engine oils — synthetic, semi-synthetic, and mineral, in viscosities matched to OEM specifications
  • Transmission and gear oils — ATF, manual transmission, differential, and industrial gear oils
  • Hydraulic oils — ISO viscosity grades for industrial and mobile hydraulic systems
  • Compressor oils — for reciprocating, screw, and rotary vane air compressors
  • Cutting and machining oils — soluble cutting fluids and neat cutting oils for metalworking
  • Specialty oils — chain oil, way oil, refrigeration oil, and similar single-purpose lubricants

Brands stocked at AIMS

Motul covers the high-performance and synthetic end of the engine, gear, and hydraulic oil range — French manufacturer with strong motorsport and industrial heritage. Anglomoil is an Australian-made range with broad coverage of industrial applications. CRC and Nulon are stocked for everyday workshop oils. Septone covers the cleaning and degreasing chemistry that complements oil work. For specialty industrial oils, we can source through our distribution channel on indented orders.

Choosing the right oil

OEM specification is the starting point. Engine oil is specified by viscosity (e.g. 5W-30) and performance standard (API SN, ACEA C3). Gear oil is specified by viscosity (e.g. 80W-90) and performance category (GL-4, GL-5). Hydraulic oil is specified by ISO VG number (32, 46, 68, 100). Get the specification right and brand becomes secondary; get it wrong and the best brand won't save the equipment.

Pack sizes

Common workshop oils are stocked in 1L, 5L, 20L, and 60L pack sizes. 208L drums are available on order for fleet and bulk users. Smaller pack sizes (250ml-500ml) are stocked in specialty oils where small quantities are typical (e.g. cutting oil, chain oil).

Storage and handling

Oil quality degrades with age, contamination, and exposure to moisture. Store sealed drums and pails in a dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Open containers should be kept covered and used within a reasonable time. For workshops dispensing oil from drums, a proper dispensing system (pump, hose reel, gun) keeps the oil clean and accurate — see our Oil Equipment range.

Disposal

Used oil is regulated waste in Australia and must be collected by a licensed waste oil contractor. Most workshops have a contracted collection service; small workshops can arrange ad-hoc collection. Don't pour used oil down drains or into general waste — the environmental and regulatory consequences are serious.
