What are pincers?

Pincers are hand tools with two pivoted jaws that meet flush at the cutting or gripping edge. They are used for pulling nails, cutting wire flush to a surface, gripping hot or stubborn fasteners and breaking off the heads of fasteners that have rusted in place. The flush-cut geometry is the distinguishing feature — nothing else cuts as close to the work surface. AIMS Industrial stocks carpenter's pincers, end-cutting pincers, tower pincers and farrier's pincers.

What is the difference between pincers and pliers?

Pliers have offset jaws designed for gripping, bending and general manipulation, with cutters often built into the side. Pincers have flush-meeting jaws designed primarily for cutting and pulling close to a surface — the leverage is at a much shorter arm, which is why pincers can pull nails and cut hardened wire that pliers struggle with.

What are pincers used for?

Pincers are used for nail extraction in carpentry, cutting wire and brads flush to a surface, gripping the heads of fasteners that need to be twisted off, and clenching in upholstery and farriery. Carpenter's pincers are the everyday workshop choice.

Pincers are hand tools with two pivoted jaws that meet flush at the cutting edge, designed for gripping, pulling and cutting at very short lever-arm angles — ideal for pulling nails flush, cutting wire close to a surface, or breaking off the heads of stubborn fasteners.

Types of pincers

  • Carpenter's pincers — the traditional pattern with rounded jaws and a claw end; pulls nails from timber without bruising the surface.
  • End-cutting pincers (end nippers) — flush-cut jaws sit perpendicular to the handles, perfect for cutting wire and brads close to a surface.
  • Tower pincers — lighter, finer pattern often used in upholstery and light wirework.
  • Farrier's pincers — heavy-duty for clinching and trimming horseshoe nails.

Pincers complement rather than replace your standard pliers and side-cutters. The flush-cut geometry is the point of difference — nothing else cuts as close to the work surface.
