Capacity ratings — match to material

Shear capacity is rated by maximum sheet thickness in mild steel; capacity in stainless steel is roughly 70-80% of mild steel rating. Common shear capacities run 1.6mm, 2.5mm, and 3.5mm in mild steel — match to the heaviest material you'll routinely cut. Pushing a shear beyond its rated capacity damages the cutting blade and motor.

Bevelling — why it matters for welding

For welded butt joints in plate, the cut edges need to be bevelled to allow weld penetration through the joint thickness. Standard practice is a 30° bevel on each side, producing a 60° included angle for filler weld deposition. A clean, consistent bevel makes for a sound, full-penetration weld; a rough, irregular bevel produces lack-of-fusion defects and porosity. Power bevelling tools produce bevels in seconds that grinding takes minutes to achieve, with much better consistency.
