Precision machine levels — also called machinist's levels or engineer's levels — are high-sensitivity spirit levels used to set machine tools, surface plates, marking-out tables and inspection equipment dead level. They're an order of magnitude more sensitive than a builder's level, designed to detect deviations measured in fractions of a millimetre per metre.
Sensitivity grades
- 0.02 mm/m (4 arc-seconds per division) — the gold standard for setting up jig borers, precision grinders and inspection plates.
- 0.05 mm/m — standard for lathes, mills and most general machine-tool installation.
- 0.10 mm/m — fast levelling for less critical equipment.
Use notes
Always take readings on a clean, dry, oil-free reference surface. Let the level settle for 30–60 seconds before reading; vial liquids respond to handling temperature. For long machine beds, take readings at multiple positions and rotate the level 180° to check for vial error.
