Routers and router bits cut profiles, edges, joints, grooves and shaped recesses into timber, plastics and composites. The router itself supplies the high-RPM spindle (typically 8,000–25,000 rpm); the bit does the cutting, with the profile and geometry determining the cut shape.

Carbide-tipped vs solid carbide
For most trade work, carbide-tipped (TCT) bits are the standard — durable enough for hardwoods and laminates, sharpenable, and value for money. Solid carbide is reserved for high-feed CNC work and very abrasive materials like MDF and HDF.
Match the bit shank to your collet (commonly 6 mm, 8 mm, 1/4" or 1/2"). For deep profile cuts, take multiple passes rather than one heavy pass — cleaner finish, longer bit life.
