Safety Harness Selection — Quick Reference (AS/NZS 1891)

Safety harness = WEARABLE component of fall arrest system — distributes impact load of fall across worker body to prevent serious injury. For AU construction + roofing + scaffolding + confined-space + height work per AS/NZS 1891.

Harness Type Best For Standard
Basic 2-Point Harness General fall arrest — single rear D-ring AS/NZS 1891.1
3-Point Harness (Front + Rear) Rescue / ladder + climb work AS/NZS 1891.1
5-Point Premium Harness Sustained suspension + comfort AS/NZS 1891.1
Roofing Harness Kit Complete roof — anchor + lanyard + harness AS/NZS 1891
Confined Space Harness Rescue-retrieve + sustained suspension AS/NZS 1891.1
Construction Harness General construction work-at-height AS/NZS 1891.1
Hot Work / FR Harness Welding + grinding — flame-resistant webbing AS/NZS 1891 + AS/NZS 4824
Sized S/M/L/XL Match wearer + thigh straps + waist

Critical: ANNUAL inspection mandatory per AS/NZS 1891.4. Retire harness IMMEDIATELY after fall (load-absorbing webbing compromised). Daily pre-use inspection — webbing damage + buckle wear + corrosion = retire. Train wearer in CORRECT fitting (D-ring centred between shoulder blades). Brands: Safetylink, Austlift, Beaver, 3M. Companion: harnesses, lanyards, height safety.

Safety Harnesses for Australian Work at Height and Fall Arrest

A safety harness is the wearable component of a fall arrest system — distributing the impact load of a fall across the worker's body to prevent serious injury. For Australian construction, roofing, scaffolding, confined-space, and industrial maintenance work, the right harness is essential PPE. AIMS Industrial supplies full-body safety harnesses compliant with AS/NZS 1891.1 — the Australian harness standard — from Safetylink and approved fall protection brands.

The harness types we stock

  • Standard fall arrest harnesses — full-body harness with rear D-ring for fall arrest, the everyday choice
  • Fall arrest with work positioning — additional waist belt and side D-rings for hands-free work positioning
  • Confined space harnesses — additional shoulder D-rings for retrieval from confined spaces
  • Tower climbing harnesses — front and rear D-rings for ladder-climbing fall arrest systems
  • Rescue harnesses — designed for casualty extraction and emergency response

D-ring configurations explained

  • Rear D-ring (dorsal) — primary fall arrest connection point, located between the shoulder blades
  • Front D-rings (sternal) — for ladder climbing, work positioning, and certain rescue applications
  • Side D-rings (waist) — for work positioning where the worker leans against the harness
  • Shoulder D-rings — for confined space retrieval where the worker is hauled out vertically

Sizing and fit

Harness fit matters more than brand. A loose harness allows the worker to slip during a fall, increasing injury risk; a tight harness restricts movement and discourages correct use. Most quality harnesses come in size ranges (S/M, L/XL, etc.) with adjustable shoulder, chest, leg, and waist straps. Worker fit-out should include the supervised fitting and adjustment of the harness, with the worker confirming that all four leg-strap attachments and the chest strap are connected before each use.

Compliance — AS/NZS 1891.1

Australian harnesses must comply with AS/NZS 1891.1 (Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices — harnesses and ancillary equipment). The standard specifies impact load testing, strap strength, buckle requirements, and labeling. Harnesses must carry the standard reference, manufacturer information, batch and date, and inspection record. Each harness must be inspected before each use, by a competent person at least every six months, and removed from service after any fall arrest event.

Care and life expectancy

Harness service life depends on use, exposure, and storage. Manufacturers typically recommend 5-10 years from the date of manufacture for an unused harness, with reduced life for daily-use harnesses. Visible damage (cuts, fraying, chemical contamination, UV degradation, melted fibres) requires immediate retirement. Harnesses involved in a fall must be removed from service even if no visible damage is present.
