Security Nuts and Clips for Tamper-Resistant Australian Installations
Security nuts and clips secure threaded fasteners against unauthorised removal — the partner components to security bolts and screws on public infrastructure, electrical equipment, and tamper-resistant assemblies. Where standard nuts allow removal with a basic wrench, security nuts use geometry, breakaway features, or one-way mechanics to defeat standard tools. AIMS Industrial supplies security nuts and clips for trade and industrial customers across Australia.
The security nut and clip types we stock
- One-way security nuts (Tri-Groove and similar) — geometric profile that allows tightening but not loosening with standard tools
- Breakaway nuts — designed with a shear point that breaks off at calibrated torque, leaving an undrivable hex base
- Wedge-style security nuts — internal wedge engages the bolt thread to resist loosening
- Tamper-proof acorn nuts — domed cover prevents access to the thread end
- Security retaining clips — formed clips that secure threaded fasteners and pins against removal
- Speed nuts (for tamper-evident applications) — see also speed nuts
Where security nuts and clips earn their place
- Public-area fastenings — bus shelters, signs, street furniture where the fastener side is accessible
- Electrical and instrumentation — terminal fastenings in public-access enclosures
- Building services — access panel fastenings, exposed bolted joints
- Vehicle and rolling stock — exterior fastenings exposed to vandalism risk
- Public seating and fixtures — bolt-and-nut fastenings on public-area furniture
How one-way security nuts work
One-way security nuts (Tri-Groove pattern is the established standard) have an asymmetric external profile — three angled grooves that engage with a matching driver tool when tightening clockwise but slip when loosening counter-clockwise. Standard wrenches can't grip the asymmetric profile to apply removal torque. The matching driver tool is held by authorised service technicians and unavailable through general trade channels.
Breakaway nuts — when removal is intended to be difficult
Breakaway nuts have a shear point built into the body — typically a hex driving section above a smooth-sided body. Tightened with a standard wrench, the hex shears off at the calibrated torque, leaving the smooth body in place. The smooth body cannot be gripped by standard wrenches, so removal requires drilling, grinding, or specialist extraction tools. Used where the fastener is intended to be a one-time installation.
Materials and finishes
- Steel zinc-plated — indoor and protected applications
- Stainless steel 304 and 316 — outdoor and corrosive environments
- Hot-dip galvanised — heavy-duty outdoor applications
Sizing
Security nuts come in metric and imperial sizes matching standard threaded fasteners. Common sizes range from M6 through M20 for general application, with larger sizes for structural and infrastructure use. Match the security nut to the bolt thread size and material grade as you would standard nuts.
Brands stocked at AIMS
Hobson and Bremick cover the security nut range across the standard profiles, sizes, and materials. For specialty profiles or large-volume installation work, additional sources through our distribution channels can supply specific patterns.
Companion ranges at AIMS
