Stick Electrode Selection — Quick Reference (MMA Welding)

Stick electrodes (MMA / SMAW) = CORE WIRE + FLUX COATING — strikes arc + melts to fill weld + flux protects pool + slags off. ON-SITE + structural + maintenance + outdoor welding standard. AWS A5 classifications.

Electrode AWS Class Best For
E6013 (General Purpose) Mild steel — workshop + DIY + sheet
E6010 (Cellulose) Pipe + dirty/rusted steel — site work
E6011 (Versatile AC/DC) General + AC welder
E7018 (Low-Hydrogen Iron Powder) Structural + critical — pre-bake required
E7016 (Low-Hydrogen) Critical + high-strength steel
E308L (Stainless 308) 304 + 304L stainless welding
E316L (Stainless 316) 316 + 316L stainless welding
E309L (Dissimilar) Stainless to carbon steel
Diameter (2.5/3.2/4.0mm) Match to material thickness + amperage

Critical: E7018 + low-hydrogen MUST be STORED IN ROD OVEN — moisture absorption = hydrogen cracking. Read AWS spec for current + position + technique. Compliance: AS/NZS 1554. Brands: Bossweld, Gemini, CIGweld. Companion: welding supplies, stick welding accessories, MIG vs TIG vs Stick.

Reliable On-Site and Structural Welding with Professional Stick Electrodes

Stick electrodes — also known as MMA (manual metal arc) or SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) electrodes — are the consumable rods used in arc welding to produce the weld. Each electrode consists of a metal core wire coated in a flux compound that stabilises the arc, shields the weld pool from atmospheric contamination and contributes alloying elements to the deposited weld metal.

Stick welding is the preferred process for on-site structural work, maintenance welding in field conditions and applications where other processes are impractical — it tolerates surface rust, scale and contamination better than MIG or TIG, and requires only a simple power source.

AIMS Industrial sells stick electrode products from Bossweld, Gemini and Kobe — established welding consumable brands supplying trade workshops, fabricators and industrial maintenance operations across Australia.

The Stick Electrodes Range

Our product range covers general purpose, low hydrogen and stainless steel stick electrodes in standard sizes for structural, maintenance and industrial welding applications.

  • Bossweld: Bossweld supplies a range of MMA electrodes including general purpose and low hydrogen types. Bossweld is an established Australian welding brand supplying trade and industrial welders across the country with reliable, consistent-performing electrodes for structural and maintenance welding.
  • Gemini: Gemini supplies stick electrodes for general welding applications. Gemini electrodes are a practical choice for workshops and maintenance operations requiring reliable general purpose MMA consumables.
  • Kobe: Kobe supplies premium MMA electrodes. Kobe Steel’s welding electrodes are Japanese-manufactured to precise metallurgical specifications, widely used in structural, pressure vessel and demanding industrial welding applications where consistent arc performance and weld quality are required.

Choosing the Right Stick Electrode

Stick electrode selection depends on the parent material, the required mechanical properties, the position and the welding machine’s output current type.

  • General Purpose vs Low Hydrogen: General purpose electrodes (rutile types) are easy to use, produce clean slag and suit most fabrication and maintenance work on mild steel. Low hydrogen electrodes (basic types) are required for high-strength steel, thick sections, restraint welding and applications where hydrogen-induced cracking is a risk. Low hydrogen electrodes must be stored dry and used from a heated quiver.
  • Electrode Diameter: Larger diameter electrodes carry higher currents and suit thicker material and higher deposition rate work. Smaller diameters are used for thin plate and positional work where heat input must be controlled.
  • Stainless Steel Electrodes: Stainless steel electrodes are used to weld 304 and 316 stainless steel components where corrosion resistance must be maintained through the weld zone. Standard mild steel electrodes are not suitable for stainless welding.
