What Are Tempilstik Temperature Indicating Sticks?

Tempilstik temperature-indicating sticks are wax-crayon style sticks that melt at a precise, factory-calibrated temperature. To use one, you mark the surface of the workpiece with the Tempilstik at the target temperature. If the mark melts when the material reaches that temperature, you have confirmation that the correct surface temperature has been achieved. If the mark remains solid, more heat is required. The signal is melting — not colour change — which gives a clear, unambiguous, and repeatable temperature indication directly on the workpiece.

Applications in Welding & Industrial Fabrication

• Preheat Verification: Many structural steels, stainless steels, and chrome-moly alloys require the base metal to be preheated to a minimum temperature before welding commences. Preheating reduces the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking, particularly in higher carbon equivalent steels. Tempilstik provides an immediate, on-the-spot confirmation that the required preheat temperature has been reached before the arc is struck, helping welders and inspectors comply with welding procedure specifications (WPS) and Australian standards.
• Interpass Temperature Control: In multi-pass welding, interpass temperature must be maintained within a specified range — hot enough to keep hydrogen risk low, cool enough to avoid microstructural damage and heat-affected zone (HAZ) problems. Tempilstik allows the welder to check interpass temperature quickly between passes without stopping for thermocouple equipment or contact thermometers. • Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): Post-weld heat treatment is required for certain materials and joint configurations to relieve residual stress and restore toughness.
