Threadlockers are anaerobic adhesives that cure between threaded surfaces to lock fasteners against loosening from vibration, dynamic load, and thermal cycling. How threadlockers work

Threadlockers are single-component anaerobic adhesives — they're stable as long as they're exposed to air, but cure when applied between metal surfaces (where air is excluded) and in contact with active metal ions. Apply a small amount to clean threads, assemble and tighten the fastener, and the adhesive cures over a few hours to fill the thread gaps and lock the assembly together. The cured threadlocker prevents the fastener from loosening through vibration while still allowing controlled disassembly when serviced.

The Loctite threadlocker grades we stock

• Loctite 222 (low strength, purple) — for small fasteners and adjustment screws; easy to remove with hand tools
• Loctite 242 / 243 (medium strength, blue) — the everyday choice; locks fasteners reliably while allowing standard disassembly with hand tools
• Loctite 263 (high strength, red) — for critical applications; requires heat or impact to disassemble
• Loctite 270 / 271 (high strength, red) — permanent threadlocking; requires significant heat for removal
• Loctite 290 (wicking, green) — penetrates already-assembled fasteners; for repair without disassembly

Choosing the right grade

• Small adjustment screws (M2-M5) — Loctite 222 (low strength) — won't strip the screw on disassembly
• General workshop fasteners (M5-M16) — Loctite 243 (medium strength) — the everyday choice
• Critical structural fasteners — Loctite 263 (high strength) — for fasteners that mustn't loosen
• Permanent assembly — Loctite 270/271 — for fasteners that won't be serviced
• Already-assembled fasteners — Loctite 290 (wicking) — penetrates and locks without disassembly
• Oily threads or galvanised fasteners — Loctite 2701 — handles surface contamination

Application practice

Clean the threads first — oil, dirt, and surface contamination prevent the threadlocker from cooking properly. Apply a small amount to the engaging threads (don't flood the joint — a few drops is plenty). Assemble and tighten to the specified torque. Allow cure time before applying load: 1-3 hours for handling strength, 24 hours for full cure. For oily or contaminated surfaces where cleaning isn't practical, use Loctite 2701 which tolerates surface contamination.

Disassembly

Medium-strength threadlockers (Loctite 242/243) disassemble with standard hand tools — the cured adhesive shears as the fastener turns. High-strength threadlockers (263, 270, 271) typically require heat (200-260°C applied locally to the fastener) to break the cured bond. Specialty disassembly fluids (Loctite Removal Fluid) help loosen cured threadlockers in some applications.

Pack sizes
