Welding Visor + Face Shield Selection — Quick Reference

Welding visors + face shields provide face protection for grinding + chipping + finishing operations AROUND welding — but NOT FOR WELDING ARC itself. Different from welding helmets (arc-flash) and standard safety glasses. Used for post-weld + adjacent fab work.

Visor Type Best For Standard
Clear Polycarbonate Face Shield Grinding + chipping post-weld work + general impact AS/NZS 1337 medium impact
Tinted Face Shield (Shade 3-5) Furnace + flame work + bright-light tasks AS/NZS 1337 + 1336 for arc-adjacent
Mesh Face Shield Chainsaw + brushcutter + airflow-needed work AS/NZS 1337
Helmet-Mounted Visor (Flip-Up) Combined helmet + visor — site work AS/NZS 1801 + 1337
Headgear with Visor (Headband) Comfortable wear without helmet AS/NZS 1337
Replacement Visor Lenses Scratched/damaged lens replacement Per visor model
Anti-Fog Coating Wet + sustained-use environments Premium option

Critical: Welding visors are NOT WELDING HELMETS. Do NOT use to look at welding arc — UV/IR exposure causes arc-eye + permanent vision damage. Use proper welding helmet (Shade 9-13 per AS/NZS 1338) for WELDING. Face shields rated AS/NZS 1336 + 1337 for arc-adjacent + post-weld + grinding. Brands: Bossweld, BossSafe. Companion: welding safety, welding helmets, safety glasses, welding eye protection guide.

Welding Visors and Face Shields for Australian Welding Bay Work

Welding visors and face shields provide face protection for welding-related work — primarily the grinding, chipping, and finishing operations that happen alongside welding but don't require full welding helmet protection. Different from welding helmets (which provide arc-flash protection for welding) and standard safety glasses (which protect eyes only), welding visors and face shields cover the full face from impact, dust, and debris while still allowing the welding helmet to be worn over them when actual welding is happening. AIMS Industrial supplies welding visors for trade welding bays.

The welding visor types we stock

  • Flip-up welding visors — combined welding shield and grinding face shield; flip the welding lens up to use as a grinding shield
  • Auto-darkening welding visors — visors with auto-darkening lenses for combined welding and grinding work
  • Grinding face shields — clear visors specifically for grinding, chipping, and finishing work
  • Fixed-shade welding visors — traditional welding visors with replaceable welding lenses
  • Combination shield-and-helmet systems — integrated welding helmet with grinding shield

Where welding visors and face shields earn their place

  • Weld preparation work — grinding, chipping, and finishing before and between welds
  • Slag removal — cleaning weld slag without removing full welding PPE
  • Weld inspection — close-up inspection of weld quality with face protection
  • General workshop face protection — grinding and rough work where face shielding is needed
  • Foundry and casting work — face protection in hot work environments

Visors versus full welding helmets

  • Welding helmets — required for actual welding (arc flash protection); see our welding helmet accessories range
  • Welding visors / face shields — for grinding, chipping, and finishing where arc-flash protection isn't needed but face protection is

Many welders use both — a flip-up combination visor provides face protection during prep and finishing, with the welding lens flipped down for actual welding. For workshops where one operator both welds and grinds frequently, combination systems save the time of switching between separate helmets and shields.

Compliance — AS/NZS 1337 and AS/NZS 1338

Australian face protection is governed by AS/NZS 1337 (general personal eye protection) and AS/NZS 1338 (welding-specific lens shading). Welding visors used for actual arc welding must meet the relevant lens shade requirements; visors used only for grinding may have lower shade requirements but still need impact and abrasion resistance certification.

Brands stocked at AIMS

Welding visors are stocked from quality safety equipment manufacturers compliant with the relevant Australian standards. For specific brand requirements (Tecmen, ProChoice, BossSafe), contact our team for current options.

Care and replacement

Welding visor lenses scratch and degrade with use. Replace when:

  • Lenses are scratched enough to obscure vision
  • The welding lens auto-darkening function fails (for auto-darkening visors)
  • The frame is damaged or no longer protects the face properly
  • After major impact damage
