CRC 5-56 Multi-Purpose Lubricant 400g Aerosol
Available
CRC 5-56 Multi-Purpose is a service spray that CRC says penetrates, lubricates and protects against corrosion. It has a continuous, self-repairing film, contains no silicone and is described by CRC as safe for all metals and alloys, and for most painted surfaces, coatings, plastics and rubbers.
It is supplied as aerosols (175g, 270g Permastraw and 400g), trigger packs (500ml and 1L), a 4L bottle and 20L and 200L drums. CRC publishes separate safety data sheets for the aerosols and the liquid packs, and their hazards differ, so check the pack you are buying in the hazard section and the variant details.

Selecting the right option
For marine use CRC makes CRC 5-56 Marine Multi-Purpose Oil 300g. For a pen applicator see CRC 5-56 Multi-Purpose Pen 12ml, and for the NF aerosol formulation see CRC 5-56 Multi-Purpose Non-Flammable Lubricant 400g - Pack of 6; each has its own data sheet and hazard classification.
Using it
Do not spray or apply while equipment is energised.
Aerosols: hold the can about 30 cm from the surface and spray liberally. Liquid packs: apply or spray liberally.
For greater penetration let it soak in, then wipe off excess.
For flooded engines CRC says to spray all electrics and leads liberally. When cleaning, test a small area first for colour fastness.
Storage and handling
Aerosol packs: protect from sunlight and do not expose to temperatures above 50 °C. Keep away from heat and ignition sources. Do not pierce or burn the can, even after use. The pressurised container may burst if heated. Liquid packs: store in a well-ventilated place and store locked up; keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources.
Limits and safety
Aerosol packs (175g, 270g Permastraw, 400g): SDS signal word Danger. Extremely flammable aerosol (H222). Pressurised container: may burst if heated (H229). Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking (AUH066). Transport class UN 1950, Aerosols, Class 2.1. Liquid packs (500ml, 1L, 4L, 20L, 200L): SDS signal word Danger. Combustible liquid (H227). May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways (H304). Not classified as a dangerous good for transport. Do not use on energised equipment. Incompatible with oxidising agents (for example hypochlorites) and acids (for example nitric acid); the aerosol SDS also lists alkalis and heat and ignition sources. The NSF H2 registration is not a food grade (H1) listing. Read the safety data sheet before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the flash point of CRC 5-56?
Aerosol packs: below 0 °C, attributed to the propellant. Liquid packs (500ml, 1L, 4L, 20L, 200L): 70 °C. CRC does not state the test method.
Is CRC 5-56 a dangerous good?
The aerosols are UN 1950, Aerosols, Class 2.1 per the CRC safety data sheet. The liquid packs are not classified as dangerous goods for transport.
Does CRC 5-56 contain silicone?
No. The CRC technical data sheet states it contains no silicone.
Can I use CRC 5-56 on live electrical equipment?
No. The CRC technical data sheet says not to apply it while equipment is energised.
Is CRC 5-56 food grade?
No. CRC holds NSF category H2 registrations (134909 for the aerosols, 134910 for the liquid packs), which means use where there is no possibility of food contact. It is not an H1 food grade listing.
Are the aerosol and liquid packs the same hazard class?
No. The aerosols are classed as extremely flammable aerosols (Category 1). The liquid packs are classed as combustible liquids (Category 4) with an aspiration hazard.
