Threading Die Selection — Quick Reference

Threading dies cut EXTERNAL (male) threads on round bar + rod + fastener stock. Combined with TAPS for internal threads, dies complete the basic thread-cutting toolkit for fitting + maintenance + repair work. Round + button + die-nut configurations.

Die Type Best For
Round Adjustable Die (Split) General workshop + adjustable thread depth
Hexagon Die Nut Thread chasing + restoration — see die nuts
Solid Round Die Pre-set diameter + production
Pipe Threading Die BSPT / NPT pipe threads — see pipe threading dies
HSS Standard Mild + low-alloy steel
HSS Cobalt Stainless + tough alloys
Metric M3 to M30+ AU workshop standard
UNC / UNF Imperial US-origin equipment
BSW (Whitworth) Older AU equipment
Die Stock / Die Holder Hand turning the die — match diameter

Critical: Match die DIAMETER + PITCH + FORM to required thread. Lubricate cutting — see cutting compounds. Start die SQUARE to bar (skewed start = damaged thread). Cut a partial turn + back off to break chip + advance. Round adjustable dies set initial cut light + final pass full depth. Brands: Sutton Tools, Bordo. Companion: threading, die nuts, tap and die sets.

Threading Dies

Threading dies cut external (male) threads on round bar, rod, and fastener stock. Combined with taps for internal threads, dies complete the basic thread-cutting toolkit for any fitting, maintenance, or repair application. AIMS Industrial supplies round split dies, die sets, and threading accessories in metric and imperial thread forms for trade, engineering, and industrial use.

Round Split Dies

Round split dies are the standard form for cutting new external threads. The split in the die body allows the cutting diameter to be adjusted via the set screws in the die stock — the centre screw opens the split slightly to increase the cutting diameter for a roughing pass; the two outer screws close it for the finishing pass. This adjustment produces cleaner, more accurate threads and extends die life by reducing the load on each cutting pass. Round dies are driven by a die stock matched to the die's outside diameter.

Thread Forms and Specifications

  • Metric (M series): ISO metric standard, the most common thread form on modern equipment in Australia. Sizes from M2 through M30 cover almost all workshop requirements. Coarse pitch (M10, M12, M16, etc.) for general fastening; fine pitch for thin-walled parts, precision adjustment, and high-vibration applications.
  • Unified (UNC/UNF): Used on American machinery, tooling, and equipment. UNC (coarse) and UNF (fine) cover the common imperial fastener sizes from 1/4" to 1".
  • BSW/BSF: British Standard threads found on older Australian machinery, classic vehicles, and British-origin equipment. Less common on new equipment but essential for maintenance of older machines.

Die Sets

Die sets typically include a range of sizes (often M3–M12 metric or an imperial equivalent) in a storage case, along with a die stock sized for the included dies. Sets are economical for workshops that need to cover a thread range without buying individual dies. Professional-grade sets use HSS dies in an alloy steel die stock — economy sets with carbon steel dies in pressed steel stocks are adequate for occasional use on mild steel only.

Material and Cutting Performance

HSS dies maintain their cutting edges through significantly more work than carbon steel and handle harder materials including stainless steel, alloy steel, and harder grades of structural steel. Carbon steel dies are an economy option for occasional threading in mild steel. For volume threading or materials above 400 MPa tensile strength, specify HSS. HSS-Co (cobalt-alloyed HSS) extends this further for difficult stainless steels and heat-resistant alloys where standard HSS dulls more quickly than is practical.
