Selecting the right option
For ASA chain the number is the pitch in eighths of an inch: 40 is 4/8 in (1/2 in), 60 is 6/8 in (3/4 in), 100 is 10/8 in (1-1/4 in). The figure after the dash is the number of strands.
This is KCM standard (carbon steel) chain. Step up to H-type where loads are heavier, or to stainless steel, nickel plated or self-lube chain where the environment or lubrication calls for it.
Fitting and use
Tensile strength is the load at which the chain breaks in one pull and is not a working load. Use the maximum allowable load for working loads and choose chain with the selection method in the KCM catalogue.
KCM's replacement guideline, based on measured elongation, is 1.5% where the larger sprocket has 60 teeth or fewer, 1.2% for 61 to 80 teeth, 1.0% for 81 to 100 teeth and 0.8% for 101 or more, where take-up is possible. With fixed shaft centres it is 0.5% to 0.7%.
Insufficient lubrication promotes wear of pins and bushings, which leads to elongation. KCM says to lubricate the clearances between inner and outer links and between the rollers and inner links.
KCM says not to replace damaged parts of a chain with new ones. Replace the whole chain, and check the sprockets when changing chain.
Check that a safety cover is fitted before running a chain drive.
