Sutton 20mm 120° Spotting Drill Bit DIN1897 - Cobalt Steel - TiN
Available
Sutton Tools is an Australian-owned manufacturer of precision cutting tools and threading accessories, supplying tradespeople, engineers, and manufacturing operations across Australia and internationally. Their product range spans taps, dies, drills, endmills, holesaws, and related tooling — all engineered to perform consistently under real industrial conditions. AIMS Industrial supplies the Sutton Tools range to Australian businesses as part of our commitment to stocking quality, trusted brands.
Sutton HSS cobalt drills incorporate elevated cobalt content (typically 5–8%) for significantly improved heat resistance and hardness retention at cutting temperature — making them the preferred choice for stainless steel, high-strength alloys, and other difficult-to-machine materials.
Where this product is used
Used wherever standard HSS drills work-harden or wear prematurely — particularly on stainless steel, exotic alloys, and hardened materials in engineering and maintenance environments.
- Drilling stainless steel grades (304, 316) in food processing, marine, and chemical plant fabrication and maintenance where work-hardening rapidly blunts standard HSS drills.
- Hole-making in high-strength structural and tooling steels in heavy engineering, defence, and oil and gas applications.
- Production drilling of nickel alloys, titanium, and other difficult-to-machine aerospace and process-industry materials.

Selecting the right option
For stainless steel, use cobalt drills with cutting fluid at a reduced speed — stainless work-hardens if the drill is allowed to rub without cutting. Use the correct feeds and speeds for the cobalt grade to avoid over-softening the cutting edge through excessive heat. Cobalt drills suit intermittent or manual drilling; for high-volume CNC work in hard materials, consider solid carbide drills.
