240V Single Phase Motors — Quick Reference by Type

Single phase 240V motors are specified by starting mechanism — which determines starting torque, running characteristics and suitable load type. AIMS stocks single phase motors from TechTop, Brook Crompton and Cmg Electric in 0.18 kW to 3.0 kW across aluminium frame sizes 56 to 100.

Motor Type Starting Method Best For Starting Torque
Capacitor-Start (CSIR) Centrifugal switch disconnects start capacitor after ~75% speed Compressors, pumps, hard-starting loads High (200-300% FLT)
Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR) Two capacitors — start cap disconnects, run cap stays in Higher efficiency & higher torque — premium compressors, hard-start applications Very High (300-400% FLT)
Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) Single run capacitor stays in continuously Fans, blowers, light-load continuous duty Low (50-100% FLT)
Split-Phase Higher-resistance start winding switched out after start Light loads — fans, small pumps, easy-starting equipment Low-Moderate (100-200% FLT)

Synchronous speeds: 2-pole = 3000 RPM, 4-pole = 1500 RPM (most common), 6-pole = 1000 RPM. For the broader three-phase range, see 415V three-phase motors. For motor mounting hardware, see motor mounts and anti-vibration mounts.

240V Single-Phase Electric Motors

AIMS Industrial stocks TechTop 240 V single-phase electric motors for applications operating on standard Australian single-phase supply. Single-phase motors are the practical solution for workshops, small machinery, light pumps and any application where three-phase power is not available. Manufactured to AS/NZS 1359 / IEC 60034 standards across the range.

For background on motor selection — frame size, mounting, IP rating, starting method and how to read a motor nameplate — see our electric motor guide.

Looking for three-phase? See our 415 V three-phase motor range, or the full electric motors collection for the wider lineup. Need variable speed control on a single-phase or three-phase drive? See variable frequency drives.

TML aluminium single-phase motors

The TechTop TML series covers general-purpose single-phase applications in aluminium-frame construction. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant and IP55 rated, TML motors suit workshop equipment, small pumps, fans and general machinery drives. The TML Dual Voltage variant provides flexibility between 240 V and 415 V supply by switching internal winding configuration — useful for OEM equipment that may operate across different site power configurations, or for workshops where future three-phase upgrade is anticipated.

TMY series

The TechTop TMY 240 V aluminium motor series provides capacitor-start, capacitor-run (CSCR) performance for applications requiring higher starting torque. The TMY is the correct selection for compressors, pumps and equipment with high inertia or high break-away torque loads where a standard single-phase split-phase motor does not provide sufficient starting capability. CSCR motors deliver up to 3-4× the starting torque of permanent-split-capacitor (PSC) motors at the cost of slightly higher complexity.

Applications & selection

Single-phase 240 V motors are used in workshop equipment, small pumps, fans, bandsaws, grinders and general machinery where three-phase power is unavailable. When specifying:

  • Verify starting method — compressors and reciprocating pumps demand a motor with high starting torque (CSCR or CSIR); fans and centrifugal pumps will run on PSC or split-phase
  • Check IP rating against environment — IP55 (TechTop standard) suits indoor workshop use; IP56 or higher for outdoor or washdown
  • Mounting — B3 (foot mount), B5 (flange) and B14 (face flange) determine how the motor attaches to the driven equipment
  • Pole count drives speed — 2-pole runs ~2,850 rpm, 4-pole runs ~1,440 rpm, 6-pole runs ~960 rpm at 50 Hz
