Actuators
AIMS Industrial supplies electric linear actuators and pneumatic actuators for industrial automation, valve operation, gate and barrier control and general motion control applications. Actuators convert electrical or pneumatic energy into controlled linear or rotary motion — replacing manual adjustment, hand-operated valves and mechanical linkages with repeatable, remotely controllable or automatically triggered movement. They are a core component in process automation, materials handling systems, industrial machinery and building services applications.
Electric Linear Actuators
Electric linear actuators use a motor-driven lead screw or ball screw to produce linear push-pull motion across a defined stroke length. They are used for positioning, clamping, lifting, sliding and valve actuation tasks where precise position control or variable speed is required. Key specifications include stroke length (50mm to 600mm are common industrial ranges), static and dynamic load rating, speed (mm/s), input voltage (12VDC, 24VDC and 240VAC versions), and IP ingress protection rating for outdoor or washdown environments. Limit switches at each end of travel are standard on most electric actuator models, providing the feedback signal for position control in automated systems.
Pneumatic Actuators
Pneumatic actuators use compressed air to drive a piston through a cylinder bore, producing linear or rotary output depending on the actuator type. Double-acting pneumatic cylinders use air on both sides of the piston for controlled extension and retraction. Spring-return single-acting cylinders use compressed air for one direction and spring force for the return — important in applications where fail-safe return to a known position is required on air supply loss. Pneumatic actuators are preferred where high cycle rates, fast response and simplicity of control are priorities and where a compressed air supply is already available.
Valve Actuators and Quarter-Turn Drives
Quarter-turn pneumatic and electric actuators mount directly to ball valves, butterfly valves and other rotary-closing valves to automate open-close operation. These are widely used in process piping systems, irrigation, water treatment and HVAC applications where manual valve operation is impractical or where automatic response to process conditions is required. Actuator sizing must account for the valve torque requirement, operating pressure and the required speed of operation.
Selecting the Right Actuator
The right actuator type depends on whether your application requires linear or rotary output, the load and stroke requirements, whether precise position control is needed (favouring electric) or speed and simplicity (favouring pneumatic), and the available energy source. AIMS can supply actuators to suit specific load, stroke and environmental requirements. For help specifying the right actuator for your application, contact our team.
