How Adaptor Sleeves Work
An adaptor sleeve is a tapered inner sleeve with a threaded outer end. The sleeve slides onto the plain shaft, and the bearing — which has a tapered bore matching the sleeve taper — is placed over the sleeve. A lock nut and lock washer on the threaded end of the sleeve are tightened to drive the bearing up the taper, expanding the bearing inner ring onto the shaft and creating the interference fit needed for positive drive. This method allows bearings to be precisely set to the correct internal clearance and provides a secure, positive location on the shaft without slip.
