Auger Bit Design

The key features of an auger drill bit are the lead screw (which pulls the bit into the timber and centres the hole), the spurs (which score the hole perimeter cleanly before the main cutting edges break through, essential for clean entry and exit holes in visible timber), and the deep spiral flute (which augers timber chips out of the hole continuously, preventing clog-up in deep boring). These features combine to produce clean, consistent holes in green or seasoned timber at depths a standard twist drill cannot reach.

Applications

Auger bits are the tool of choice for electrical and plumbing rough-in in timber frame construction (passing cables and pipes through top and bottom plates), drilling holes for coach screws and large bolts in structural timber connections, creating drainage holes in posts and sleepers, and boring large-diameter holes for door hardware with a swing-brace or right-angle drill drive. Standard brace-shank auger bits work in traditional braces; hex-shank augers work in modern cordless drills.
