Brass Elbow Fittings
Brass elbow fittings redirect flow in pipework and tube systems — changing direction by 90° or 45° without requiring bent or curved pipe runs. They are one of the most frequently used fittings in pneumatic, plumbing, hydraulic, and general fluid conveyance installations. AIMS Industrial supplies brass elbow fittings in BSP threaded and compression configurations to suit trade and industrial applications across Australia.
Types of Brass Elbow Fittings
Elbow fittings are available in several configurations to suit different pipe connection methods and installation requirements.
- BSP male elbow: Both ends are male BSP thread. Connects into two female BSP ports — common in pneumatic manifolds and valve bodies.
- BSP female elbow: Both ends are female BSP thread. Used where two male fittings or pipe nipples need to be connected at an angle.
- Male-to-female BSP elbow: One male end, one female end. Provides directional change with the ability to add a further extension fitting at the female end.
- Compression elbow: Uses a compression nut and ferrule rather than threads to seal onto copper or plastic tube. No thread sealing compound required — a direct, clean installation.
- Barbed elbow: For flexible hose connections. Press the hose over the barbed end and secure with a clamp for a low-pressure fluid connection.
90° vs 45° Elbows
90° elbows are the standard choice for changing direction at a right angle — the most common configuration in pneumatic and plumbing installations. 45° elbows produce a gentler direction change and are used where space allows a longer run or where the flow pressure drop at a sharp 90° bend needs to be minimised. In pneumatic systems and high-flow liquid lines, a 45° elbow reduces turbulence and pressure loss compared to a sharp 90°.
BSP Thread Standards
BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the thread standard used throughout Australian industrial and trade plumbing. There are two types: BSPP (parallel) and BSPT (tapered). Tapered threads seal by thread engagement and sealant; parallel threads require a face seal or O-ring to achieve a pressure-tight joint. Most Australian pneumatic fittings use BSPP with a bonded seal or thread tape. Confirm the thread type of your existing installation before ordering to ensure compatibility.
Pressure Ratings
Brass elbow fittings are widely used in pneumatic systems operating at standard shop air pressures (up to 20 bar for many standard fittings) and in low-to-medium pressure fluid systems. For high-pressure hydraulic systems, specify fittings rated for the operating pressure of your system — standard brass fittings are not rated for high-pressure hydraulics. Check the working pressure specification before use in any pressurised application.
