Brazing + Soldering Torch Selection — Quick Reference

Brazing + soldering torches = HANDHELD GAS-FUELLED tools for joining COPPER TUBE + brazing metal fittings + lead-free soldering. Refrigeration + plumbing + automotive + workshop standard.

Torch Type Best For
MAPP Gas Torch Higher temperature — silver brazing + copper
Propane Torch Soldering + light brazing
Oxy-Acetylene Torch See gas welding equipment
Butane Soldering Torch (Pencil) Precision electronics + jewellery
Self-Lighting Torch Built-in piezo igniter
Refrigeration Torch Kit HVAC + AC service complete kit
Brazing Rods (Silver / Copper) Joining filler material
Flux (Brazing / Soldering) Joint cleaning + flow

Critical: Brazing temperature 600-900°C; soldering <450°C. Match FILLER MATERIAL + FLUX to base metal + temperature. Ventilate work area + PPE — gloves + eye protection. Brand: brazing + soldering torches. Companion: gas welding equipment, soldering, filler metals.

Join Copper Tube and Braze Metal Fittings with Professional Gas Torches

Brazing and soldering torches are handheld gas-fuelled heat sources used to join copper tube and fittings, braze dissimilar metals, heat-shrink connections, anneal metal, and perform localised heating tasks in plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, automotive and general metalworking.

Brazing (using filler metal above 450°C) produces a stronger joint than soft soldering and is used for structural connections, hydraulic fittings and high-pressure copper systems.

Soft soldering (below 450°C) is used for electrical connections and lower-pressure plumbing.

The torch gas type (propane, butane or MAP gas) determines the flame temperature and heat output available.

We sells brazing and soldering torches from Garrick, Bossweld and Tanjant — welding, gas equipment and industrial tool brands supplying plumbers, HVAC technicians, fabricators and industrial tradespeople across Australia.

The Brazing & Soldering Torches Range

Our range covers propane and MAP gas torches in hand torch and pistol grip configurations for copper tube brazing, soft soldering, heat shrink and general heating applications.

  • Garrick: Garrick supplies brazing and soldering torches as part of their gas equipment range. Garrick Herbert is an established Australian welding and gas equipment brand with a history supplying the trade and industrial sectors, including plumbing and HVAC applications.
  • Bossweld: Bossweld supplies brazing and soldering torch products for trade and workshop use. Bossweld’s gas torch range is engineered for reliable performance in trade environments.
  • Tanjant: Tanjant supplies gas torch products for brazing and soldering applications. Tanjant offers practical torch solutions for plumbing, HVAC and general metalworking tasks.

Choosing the Right Brazing or Soldering Torch

Torch selection depends on the gas type, the flame temperature required for the application and the work environment.

  • Propane vs MAP Gas: Propane torches reach temperatures adequate for most soft soldering and light copper brazing applications and use readily available LPG cylinders. MAP gas (methylacetylene-propadiene) burns hotter than propane and is the preferred choice for brazing copper tube with silver-based brazing alloys, providing faster heat input and cleaner joints on larger-diameter tube.
  • Brazing vs Soft Soldering: Soft solder (tin-lead or lead-free) flows at temperatures achievable with a standard propane torch and is used for low-pressure and electrical applications. Brazing filler metals (silver alloys, copper-phosphorous) require higher temperatures and produce joints with significantly higher strength, required for refrigeration, HVAC and high-pressure copper systems.
