Choosing the Right Gas Welding Equipment

Gas welding equipment selection depends on the application (welding, cutting, heating or brazing), the gas system in use and the required performance level.

• Torch Bodies: Welding torch bodies accept interchangeable nozzles for different heat output ranges. Cutting torch bodies (or cutting attachments fitted to welding torches) introduce a central oxygen jet that blows away the oxidised steel in the cutting kerf. Match the torch body to the nozzle and accessory range being used.
• Regulators: Separate regulators are required for the oxygen cylinder and the fuel gas cylinder. Regulators must be matched to the gas type — oxygen regulators must never be used on fuel gas cylinders and vice versa. Confirm the inlet thread and outlet pressure range suit the application.
• Flashback Arrestors: Flashback arrestors are safety devices fitted to the hose at the regulator end (and optionally at the torch end) that prevent a flashback or backfire from travelling back through the hose to the cylinder. Their use is a mandatory safety requirement in most Australian workplaces operating oxy-fuel equipment.
