Why a reel matters more for gas hoses

Gas hoses left lying on the floor pick up damage that's not always visible — small cuts, abrasion through the rubber outer jacket, kinks that weaken the inner liner. A small leak in an oxy or acetylene hose is a serious safety risk: oxygen accelerates combustion in any nearby ignition source, and acetylene is highly flammable in air. A hose reel keeps the hoses lifted, untangled, and inspected regularly during retract — extending hose life and reducing the chance of an undetected leak.

Hose specs that matter

Oxy-acetylene hose is purpose-built for the application — twin-hose construction with green for oxygen and red/maroon for acetylene, BSP or similar threaded end fittings, working pressure rating well above the regulator output. Standard hose ID is 6mm or 8mm depending on the cutting torch flow rate. Length is determined by the reach the reel needs to cover — most workshop reels carry 10m-15m of twin hose.

Inspection and maintenance

Oxy-acetylene hose reels need periodic inspection — the spring tension drops over time, hose end fittings wear, and hoses themselves should be checked for damage at every retract. Replace hoses showing cracking, abrasion through the outer jacket, or any visible damage near fittings. The cost of a replacement hose set is trivial against the safety risk of running a damaged hose.

Mounting

Wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or column-mounted are the options. Ceiling-mounted suits multi-bay workshops where the same reel can serve adjacent bays. Wall-mounted suits single-bay setups where the gas cylinders are nearby. Match the mounting to the layout, and ensure clear access to the reel for hose retraction and routine inspection.
