Oxy-LPG Hose Reels

Oxy-LPG (oxygen and LPG) is the alternative to oxy-acetylene for cutting, heating, and brazing work — particularly where larger-volume heating is needed or where the cleaner combustion of LPG suits the application. AIMS Industrial stocks twin-hose oxy-LPG reels for workshops running LPG-based gas equipment, with components specifically rated for LPG service.

What makes oxy-LPG different from oxy-acetylene

  • Hose construction — LPG hose has a different inner liner than acetylene, formulated for compatibility with LPG over long service life
  • End fittings — LPG fittings use different colour coding (red for fuel, but with LPG-specific connection types in some standards)
  • Pressure rating — LPG often runs at higher cylinder pressure than acetylene, with appropriate regulator output
  • Working temperature — LPG flames are slightly cooler than acetylene, suiting heating and brazing more than precision cutting

The reel types we stock

  • Spring-retract twin-hose reels — the standard for workshop cutting and heating bays
  • Hand-cranked twin-hose reels — for longer hose runs and heavier-duty service
  • Open-frame versus enclosed — enclosed protects the hose; open-frame is lighter and easier to service

Why use oxy-LPG over oxy-acetylene

LPG is widely available, cheaper than acetylene per unit of heat output, and produces less soot in heating and brazing applications. The flame temperature is lower than acetylene (about 2,800°C versus 3,150°C), so for the highest-precision cutting work acetylene retains an edge — but for heating, soft soldering, brazing, and general cutting in mild steel, LPG performs well. For trade workshops, the choice often comes down to gas supply availability and the dominant work type.

Brands stocked at AIMS

Coxreel and Macnaught both supply LPG-rated reels — the construction and components are similar to their oxy-acetylene reels but with hose and fittings specifically rated for LPG service. Don't substitute oxy-acetylene hose on an LPG reel — the inner liner can degrade differently and the colour coding becomes confused, both of which are safety problems.

Inspection

LPG hose deteriorates with age and UV exposure, particularly the outer jacket. Inspect the hose at every retract for cracking, abrasion, or any visible damage. Replace hoses showing wear — the cost is trivial against the safety risk of an undetected leak. Smell of LPG near the reel or at the torch is the usual first sign of a developing leak; a soapy water test confirms the leak point.

Mounting

Wall-mounted suits single-bay use; ceiling-mounted suits multi-bay workshops with overhead service feeds; column-mounted suits centralised welding bays. The mounting affects how the hose drops to the work and how easily the reel can be inspected.
