Standard hose sizes

Match hose ID to the torch flow rate. Undersized hose restricts gas flow at the torch tip and limits cutting capacity; oversized hose works but adds bulk. For general workshop oxy-acetylene cutting, 6mm hose covers most work; for heavy plate cutting or sustained production, 8mm provides better flow.

Why welding hose is colour-coded

The standard colour coding — green for oxygen, red or maroon for fuel gas — is universal across Australia and provides immediate visual identification of which hose carries which gas. Don't substitute non-standard hose colours; the visual identification matters for safety. The matching coloured fittings (left-hand thread for fuel, right-hand for oxygen) also prevent cross-connection — but the hose colour is the primary visual safety check.

Pressure rating

Welding hose is typically rated to 20 bar (300 PSI) working pressure — well above typical regulator output pressures (5-10 bar). The hose construction includes:

• Inner rubber liner compatible with the specific gas (oxygen-clean for green hose, hydrocarbon-resistant for red hose)
• Reinforcement layers (typically textile braid) for pressure containment
• Outer rubber jacket for abrasion and weather resistance

• Smell of gas near connections — soapy water test confirms leak point; replace immediately if leaks are found

Damaged welding hose is a serious safety hazard — leaking oxygen accelerates combustion of nearby ignition sources; leaking acetylene or LPG is highly flammable in air. Replace hose at the first sign of damage rather than continuing in service.
