Why gas lens versus standard collet body

Gas lens collet bodies have a fine mesh screen that distributes shielding gas more evenly than standard collet bodies. The result is improved weld shielding, cleaner weld appearance, and better resistance to atmosphere contamination. Gas lenses also allow the tungsten electrode to extend further from the cup (improving access in tight joints) without losing gas coverage. For sustained TIG work, particularly on stainless steel and aluminium where coverage matters, gas lenses are worth the cost difference over standard collet bodies.

Ceramic cup sizing

Ceramic cups are sized by number — typical range is #4 (small, ~6mm) through #12 (large, ~19mm). Larger cups provide better gas coverage and allow more electrode extension; smaller cups suit tight access work. Match cup size to the work: smaller cups for detail and access work, larger cups for sustained welding where coverage matters. Each cup size requires a matching collet body and gas lens.

Foot pedal amperage controls

Foot pedal amperage control is essential for production TIG welding — the welder modulates amperage during the weld to control heat input on varying material thickness, around joints, and at start/stop points. Without foot pedal control, TIG welding is significantly more limited. Most TIG welders have foot pedal connection ports; matching pedals are stocked to suit the common welder brands.

Water coolers

Water-cooled TIG torches require a circulating water cooler to maintain torch temperature during sustained welding. Coolers are typically sized by torch amperage capacity and duty cycle requirements. For workshops doing sustained TIG above 150A, a water cooler matched to the torch is essential equipment.
