Cutting Torch Accessories
Oxy-fuel cutting equipment requires a range of accessories and consumable components to operate safely and effectively. Cutting tips wear and must be replaced as the orifice enlarges from repeated use; hoses and fittings require periodic inspection and replacement as part of a safe gas equipment maintenance programme; and ancillary safety devices protect both the operator and the equipment from flashback and backfire events. AIMS Industrial supplies cutting torch accessories and oxy-fuel consumables for gas cutting and welding applications.
Cutting Tips and Nozzles
The cutting tip is the consumable component of the cutting torch — the orifice through which the preheat gases and cutting oxygen flow. Tips are manufactured to specific size designations that determine the preheat flame size and cutting oxygen flow, matched to the material thickness being cut. A tip that is too small for the material thickness produces insufficient preheat; a tip too large wastes gas and can produce a ragged cut. Tips must be replaced when the orifice has enlarged or when the seating surface is damaged — a worn tip seat causes gas leaks at the torch head and an inconsistent flame.
Hoses and Hose Fittings
Oxy-fuel hoses are colour-coded by convention (red for fuel gas, blue for oxygen in Australia) and manufactured to AS 1335 for gas welding equipment. Hoses must be inspected regularly for cuts, abrasion, and kinking — damaged hose is a significant fire and explosion risk and must be replaced. Hose fittings use a right-hand thread for oxygen and a left-hand thread for fuel gases — the left-hand thread is identified by a groove cut into the fitting hex. This convention prevents accidental cross-connection.
Flashback Arrestors
Flashback arrestors are safety devices fitted between the hose and the torch body (and optionally at the regulator) that prevent a flashback — the backflow of flame into the hose — from propagating to the cylinder. They are required on oxy-fuel equipment under Australian WHS regulations and must be of the correct type for the gas (oxygen or fuel) at the fitting end where they are installed. Arrestors should be replaced, not serviced, when triggered by a flashback event.
Regulators and Gauges
Gas regulators reduce cylinder pressure to the working pressure required at the torch. Regulators are gas-specific — oxygen regulators must not be used on fuel gas cylinders, and vice versa. Regulator diaphragms and seals deteriorate over time and require periodic inspection and overhaul. A regulator that delivers erratic pressure or creeps (output pressure rises when the torch is closed) must be withdrawn from service and overhauled or replaced before further use.
